Hey there! Today, I have a question for you: what’s the biggest thing stopping you from hitting your language learning goals? Maybe you’re thinking: “I don’t have enough time,” “I’m not motivated,” or “The materials are just too boring.” And while these are valid reasons, I’d also throw in one more: a lack of clear goals. But we’ve already covered that in a previous post.

There’s another factor, though—something people rarely talk about, but it can make the process of learning feel like a grind.

What Are Limiting Beliefs?
Before we get into how to overcome them, let’s first understand what limiting beliefs are. They are negative thoughts and beliefs about ourselves and the world around us that hold us back from achieving our goals. In the context of language learning, these beliefs often sound like:

  • “I’m not capable of learning a language.”
  • “I don’t have the talent for this.”
  • “This language is just too difficult for me.”
  • “Learning a language is hard work.”
  • “Grammar and vocabulary are so boring.”

The Impact of Limiting Beliefs
These limiting beliefs can drain your energy, dampen your motivation, and strip away any positive emotions around learning. It’s almost like they act as your personal Dementor, sucking the joy out of the experience.

Here’s how this might look in real life:
If someone believes they don’t have a knack for languages, they’ll see every little difficulty as proof.
Didn’t immediately grasp a grammar rule? – “That’s because I’m not talented.” Made a mistake while speaking? – “There it is, more proof that I’ll never master this language.”

The outcome? They quickly give up on learning.
How to Tackle Limiting Beliefs
Now that we know how these beliefs can undermine our progress, how do we change them?

First, it’s essential to notice when these thoughts arise and work on transforming them. Above, I listed a few common limiting beliefs, but there are many more.
  • A great way to uncover yours is by completing the following sentence: “I’m not fluent in this language because….”
  • Write down 3-5 reasons that come to mind.
  • Then, examine your answers and ask yourself: What belief would actually help me in this situation? From there, jot down some new, supportive beliefs that can replace the negative ones.

On top of rethinking limiting beliefs, start focusing more on your successes—no matter how small they seem. Every bit of progress matters! Seek support from people around you, whether it’s friends, family, or a language-learning community.
